Ketiganya membantu kita memahami kairos, tetapi pusatnya tetap Kristus.
Tuhan, ajarlah aku mengenali saat-Mu.
Bukalah mataku ketika Engkau datang,
bukalah telingaku ketika Engkau berbicara,
dan berilah aku keberanian untuk menjawab.
ENGLISH — CHRONOS AND KAIROS
There is a kind of time that we measure by hours, days, and years. In Greek, chronos refers to time as it passes; while kairos refers to the right or opportune moment, a moment filled with meaning and opening a possibility for the human person to respond to God’s call.
Jesus said:
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news!”
— Mark 1:15
“The time is fulfilled” is a kairos. Time is no longer merely something that passes. Time becomes a place of encounter between the human person and God.
Kierkegaard sees human life as a “moment” of decision, when a person can no longer hide behind the crowd or simply follow others. Before God, the human person is called to become oneself and to make a decision in faith. Kairos, therefore, is not primarily about the amount of time, but about a personal response before God.
Gabriel Marcel deepens this through the experience of presence and hope. The presence of another person cannot be treated like an object that we can possess or control. Likewise, we cannot force or possess God’s moment. We can only receive, be present, and open ourselves to the mystery that comes to us.
Karl Rahner, through his theology of grace, helps us see that the human person lives continually before the mystery of God. God’s grace does not always come through extraordinary events. In ordinary life, too, a person may discover that he or she is touched by a deeper call. There, chronos can become kairos.
The Psalmist prays:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a wise heart.”
— Psalm 90:12
To number our days means learning to receive time as a gift. Each day brings the possibility of listening, repenting, forgiving, loving, and returning to God.
Therefore Jesus says:
“Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
— Matthew 25:13
To keep awake means to live attentively. Not with anxiety, but with the awareness that God can meet the human person in an ordinary moment.
Kierkegaard reminds us of the decision of faith. Marcel reminds us of presence and hope. Rahner directs us toward the mystery of God present in the depths of human life.
All three help us understand kairos, but the center remains Christ.
“This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
— Psalm 118:24
The passing day is chronos.
The day received in faith can become kairos.
And perhaps our prayer can be simple:
Lord, teach me to recognize your time.
Open my eyes when you come,
open my ears when you speak,
and give me the courage to respond.
